Why Choose a Manual Collet/Nut Router Spindle Motor?

Manual collet/nut spindle motors are an excellent choice for shops that want high performance without the cost and complexity of an automatic tool change system. They provide a reliable, field serviceable solution for CNC routers used in woodworking, plastics, composites, and other machining applications. Below are the key features and benefits that make these motors a popular choice among manufacturers.

High Performance in a Compact Design

Our manual collet/nut motors are priced competitively and deliver exceptional performance. Complete motor packages include the motor, variable frequency drive, collet, nut, and 3 phase reactor, providing a cost effective solution for new installations and replacement projects.

Each motor utilizes a high torque design that produces more horsepower in a smaller frame size than many competing motors. Spindle speeds reach up to 24,000 RPM, making these motors suitable for demanding routing and machining applications where speed and cutting performance are critical.

Built for Long Service Life

Durability is one of the biggest advantages of these spindle motors. Every motor is manufactured with a superior quality copper rotor and an efficient cooling fan design that helps maintain lower operating temperatures. Reduced heat generation extends bearing life and improves overall motor reliability.

Each rotor is dynamically balanced to ISO tolerances for smooth operation. Bearings are sealed for life ABEC 7 spindle grade bearings, and most models utilize three to four bearings to support continuous operation in demanding production environments.

The efficient design also reduces load loss and absorbed current, helping lower energy consumption throughout the life of the motor.

Engineered for Reliability

Every motor in this product line, except the SM-CAF46, incorporates dual angular contact thrust bearings at the tool area to handle higher thrust loads. A labyrinth sealing arrangement provides an additional layer of protection beyond the sealed bearings, helping prevent contaminants from reaching critical components.

For specialized applications, the SM-C54 is available with left hand thread rotation, which can help prevent material tearing during certain cutting operations. We also offer SAWM models featuring a high speed saw arbor design complete with saw flanges and nut.

Flexible Voltage & Drive Options

We stock motors in both 230V and 380V configurations to accommodate a wide range of machine requirements. A 460 VAC drive can operate either voltage option, while a 230 VAC drive can operate 230V motors directly.

For lower horsepower applications, we offer drives that convert 220 VAC single phase input to 220 VAC three phase output for motors up to 5 HP. We also offer drives that convert 110 VAC single phase input to 220 VAC three phase output for motors up to 1.5 HP, providing flexibility for shops with limited power availability.

Protection & Operating Specifications

Standard motors feature IP50 dust protection. An optional IP55 enclosure with air purge tubing is available for applications requiring additional environmental protection.

The maximum spindle speed is 24,000 RPM, while the recommended minimum operating speed is 7,000 RPM. In some applications, motors can be operated at lower speeds when an external cooling fan is used.

Please note that moisture protection is not warranted on the IP55 option because proper performance depends on maintaining a dry air purge supply.

Why Choose Ekstrom Carlson?

Choosing the right spindle motor depends on horsepower requirements, operating speed, tooling configuration, and available power. Download the brochure above for detailed specifications on every model we stock.

As leading industrial spindle manufacturers, Ekstrom Carlson supports custom machinery lines with world-class engineering from our Rockford, Illinois facility. Whether you are troubleshooting an unexpected spindle failure, retrofitting an automatic tool changer (ATC), or researching how to match proper horsepower and RPM for high-speed routing, our engineers design solutions built for continuous industrial duty cycles.

Saw motors and custom shaft motors – CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE

motors

Need a Saw Motor or Custom Shaft Motor for Shaper, Moulder, or Tenoner Applications?

Our high performance arbor motors are manufactured by Fimec, who has been building motors in Italy since 1956, and are well suited for saw, shaper, moulder, and tenoner applications that require special shaft extensions and higher speeds. Like our other product lines, these motors are made in Italy but serviced, stocked, supported, and modified at our Rockford, Illinois facility.

Compact High Performance Design

The design delivers a considerable amount of horsepower in a compact motor footprint, and motors can be mounted vertically when your application calls for it. If you need higher load capability, we can supply motors with an oversized bearing at the tool end or a precision duplex angular contact bearing.

Automatic Tool Change Capability

For applications needing automatic tool change, our arbor motor line also offers HSK63C automatic tool change activated by an Allen wrench at the spindle nose. This option is available on the H71c2Se, H80Sb2Se, and H90S2Se models, with speed capabilities between 1,800 RPM and 7,200 RPM.

Specification Overview

The reference table below outlines frame sizes, power ranges, available speeds, options, voltage and frequency support, protection ratings, insulation class, and service duty — everything you need to scope an arbor motor for your application.

Why Fimec Saw Motors?

Fimec has manufactured high performance saw motors in Italy with premium components since 1956, delivering high horsepower in a compact size that makes them well suited to saw arbor applications. The housing is an extruded light alloy flat design, and the rotor uses a pressure aluminum die cast cage construction. Motors are balanced with a half key installed on the shaft extension, and the stator is wound with Class H copper conductor insulation.

Standard bearings are single row, deep grooved, shielded for protection, and greased for life. The exception is the SAWM C54 and special arbor motors, which use duplex angular contact bearings at the front end.

Stock & Lead Time Information

Stock shaft diameters in the United States are typically 1.00 inch for all motors other than the H48 and SAWM C54, which use a 5/8 inch shaft. If your application requires a special shaft, different length, larger diameter, or HSK63C, these are available in 3 to 5 weeks from Italy, or 1 to 3 weeks from our Rockford, Illinois facility for the H71c2Se, H80Sb2Se, and H90S2Se models.

If you need an HSK63F, ISO, CAT, or BT spindle nose, those configurations are available through our SpindleMax Automatic Tool Change line instead.

Additional Configuration Options

Motors are available in both three phase SE and single phase 0.9 and 1.04 HP designs. Single phase motors include a run capacitor permanently connected to the auxiliary winding for starting.

Saw motors are typically supplied with a left or right hand threaded shaft, nut, and flanges, though other configurations are available upon request. Many of our motors also use a custom extended solid shaft for use as a shaper, moulder, or tenoner motor with a hydrotool or locking nut. Lead times of 1 to 5 weeks are typical for motors with shaft modifications.

Terminal box placement is flexible depending on the motor, near the exit shaft, near the fan cover, or on top of the motor, and it can be rotated in 90 degree steps to allow cable entry from different directions.

Brake Options & Safety Features

For applications requiring a brake, we offer two options. Motors with a pneumatic brake, available on H80 and H100 frames, use a pneumatically operated annular piston working against a spring loaded friction disk at the rear shield. This design allows brake torque to be adjusted by air pressure, delivers constant brake force, lasts longer with no electric brake windings, and provides higher braking power than DC electric brakes. An electric valve is required to control air supply. These brakes are not designed for high cycling and are not covered under warranty.

Motors with a DC electric security brake, available on all frames, are well suited for cutting safety stops and can be wired separately or directly from the motor terminal box through a high quality rectifier. These are also not designed for high cycling and are not covered under warranty.
